Born in Yorkshire in 1979 and brought up in Kent, Mike has been playing music for the last 20 years.
Raised on the Blues by his dad Phil (also a musician) in a house where any music post 1959 was frowned upon, Mike started playing drums aged nine when he fell in love with the grooves and shuffles of Odie Payne, S.P. Leary, Fred Below and Earl Palmer.
About the same time, Mike started playing the Trombone - studying with the legendary Alan Hutt (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra), going on to play in big bands, county youth orchestras and countless theatre shows.
These days, Mike gets to play drums with some great people – he’s recently joined Paul Lamb & the King Snakes and is looking forward to some great gigs and tours.
Prior to joining Paul, Mike worked with Jerimiah Marques (10 years and counting!), West Weston’s Bluesonics and the Big Town Playboys.
Along the way Mike’s done recordings, gigs, TV, radio or tours with Little George Sueref, Lazy Lester, Rodrigeuz, Big Joe Louis, David Maxwell, Lisa Mills, Andy Fairweather Low, The Whoopee Burlesque Club, Dana Gillespie, The Freeze, Mark Lamar, The Extraordinaires and Jools Holland.
Mike has toured in the USA, Africa, and all over Europe.
Memorable gigs include WOMAD in Las Palmas, Ronnie Scott’s (supporting Van Morrison), the Bass Line in Johannesburg, the Newport Beach Blues Festival in California, Woodstock 2001 & 2002 in Heidelburg South Africa, Café Populart in Madrid, 3 Arts Stadium in Cape Town, Biscuits and Blues in San Francisco and Café Boogaloo in Santa Cruz.
Mike’s on a few recordings, mostly Blues stuff, including Jerimiah Marques’ The Chess Sessions and This is Hip!, Ben Andrews’ Gallows Pole, Geoff Achison’s Each Long Day and David Maxwell’s Max Attack (with Duke Robbillard).
As well as playing drums, Mike has a production company (Rimshot Productions) where he works as a producer and engineer, specialising in producing roots, jazz and acoustic music for various labels and artists from around the world.
On the Blues side, Mike has recorded and mixed critically acclaimed albums for Ian Siegal (Meat & Potatoes), Matt Schofield (Siftin’ Thru Ashes, The Trio...Live), Roger Hubbard (Out of My Hands), Jerimiah Marques (This is Hip!) and Memo Gonzalez (Live in the UK).
Looking to the future, Mike is looking forward to working with Paul and the band - a group he’s wanted to work with since first seeing them perform 15 years ago!
